St. Clair Features Fractal Art

Artist Mike Morse exhibits fractal art with St. Clair Gallery, including the shown work, The Key, a 20 be 27 inch beautifully framed piece valued at $275.00. Gallery Director Howard Bagley says all three of Mike's pieces in this exhibit are exceptional values.

Mike is a native San Diegan, and has spent time in New England and the Midwest before moving back to San Diego in 2003. His professional career has been in manufacturing, but has always dabbled in the arts since high school. He started working with fractals in 1996. His latest fractal composites are first generated from a single fractal equation set at a single location in a freeware program called Fractal Explorer, generating sometimes over a hundred separate fractal images using different color pallets, filters, and transformation functions from that set/location, and combining the resulting images in Photoshop using Photoshop's unique layer filtering system.

Nancy Baker returns to St. Clair

Artist Nancy Baker is exhibiting four pieces in the Alkyd medium including the piece at left, Black Fire. an 18 by 24 inch work valued at $175.00. Gallery Director Howard Bagley says this is one of the best values in the exhibit. The western theme is continued in Nancy's selected pieces with such titles as Bull Rider, Bronc Rider and The Stray.

Nancy's work is exhibited in the Salon of the gallery along with Chuck McPherson, Barbara McVey and Adam Koltz.

SAMPLE ARTWORK

Pelagic Jelly, a 40x24 watercolor by Adam Koltz valued at $895.00 anchors the front of the main hallway in the gallery. Adam is exhibiting five pieces including a charming polar bear and cubs titled Northern Madonna and Two Kids.

Huntington Beach Bench at Night, a 20x26 photograph by Marc McVey valued at $185.00. This piece is "in the camera." That is, not treated in post production to create the color effect. A nice piece of work, Marc.

Silver and Gold, a mixed media work measuring 48x48 inches by Kathleen Huneke valued at $750.00. Kathleen is exhibiting four large, wall commanding pieces in this exhibit. They are perfect for that hard to fill spot where small pictures get lost.

Love Train, by Bok Kelsch is an acrylic piece valued at $600.00. This playful work is worth the trip to the gallery all by itself. It is far more delightful in person than can be displayed here. Bob's work is being exhibited in one of the shared offices of the building. Please be sure you join him for a look at some fun art.

California Pelican, a small 8x10 inch photograph by Howard Bagley is valued at $95.00. This image was taken at La Jolla Shores where pelicans congregate this time of the year.

The Salon of the St. Clair Gallery will become a

Watercolor Studio Duriing the Artists' Reception . . .

Artist Chuck McPherson will domonstrate his formitable techniques in the art of watercolor painting from 3:00 to about 5:30 in the Salon of the gallery. Chuch is not only a good artist, but very entertaining with his demos . . . "It's almost a floor show," according to Gallery Director Howard Bagley.

A drawing for the demo piece will be conducted at about 5:30 . . . Some lucky gallery guest will take this work home for the price of a drawing ticket.

At right is "Solitude," a recent work by the artist valued at $756.00.

Sixteen of the artsist's pieces are exhibited in the Salon. This is the most extensive showing of any artists work St. Clair has ever attempted, and the most McPherson pieces ever exhibited at one time

Below is Heritage Nights, a piece valued at $1,800.00.

Ingrid Wolters Offers Variety . . .

Artist Ingrid Wolters is exhibiting four works in this exhibit. Three are non-representational pieces, and one representational abstract.

At right is one of her non-representational pieces, Suffering, done in acrylic and measuring 22 by 28 inches. The work is valued at $450.00.

At left is another acrylic piece, Painted Desert, a 16 by 20 inch work valued at $425.00. This piece is in a category Gallery Director Howard Bagley refers to as representational abstract. It is representational because the subject can be identified (desert, cactus, mountains) and they are described in an abstracted manner rather than realistically (close to photo accuracy).

Jeffrey R. Brosbe Exhibits Home Town Work . . .

Jeffrey R. Brosbe generally exhibits work from the four corners of the world gathered on his travels to exotic locals.

For this exhibit he has turned his attention to one of the "best tourist stops anyhere - Dan Diego, California."

"Star of India," Limited Edition Photography (2/10) is at right. The piece measures 24 by 32 inches framed and is valued at $450.00.

Jeff looks at art: "Since before history began, man (and even some animals lower on the phylum scale) has collected things.

"I am a collector. Hopefully, you are collectors too. I believe in holding dear, collecting, and sharing those things I discover that touch me, that stimulate me, that move me emotionally, intellectually, or, best of all, in both ways.

"I look upon creating the image much as a poet must feel about creating a haiku. It should be whole in its surface observation while offering commentary in its interpretation.

You will want to examine Jeff's work during the artists' reception. Please allow enough time to absorb and be absorbed by it.

The Scavenger Project

I'm trying something new for me this month. I'm participating in the Art House's Scavenger Project. I just got the packet yesterday so I don't have any images to show off yet. But I've got plenty of ideas!

My Sabbatical from Painting

Well, my poor neglected Blog is the result of a self imposed Sabbatical from painting as I allow myself time to search for that elusive something else, something more, something different that I feel my art needs to accomplish.

I've done this before and actually have a couple sketchbooks full of research I did before the infamous 9/11 events that derailed some of my art projects or themes. I don't feel it is right for me to pick those projects up at this time so I've been looking for "something else".

This period of searching is coming to an end so I will soon be covered in paint and posting new artworks in the coming months, hopefully weeks to come. I'll also be listing some of my paintings I have on hand on Ebay.

While looking I've been working on my crochet skills. I don't know why but when between artworks I like to immerse myself in more domestic crafts. And since I can't quilt for beans, crochet is my craft of choice.

This is one of my favorite horse paintings I've made. This one is in my personal collection and is framed & hanging in my home. I took the photo of it tonight & the white lines on it are actually the glare from the camera on the glass.

This is an ink painting on 16 x 20 inch paper with metallic ink details. It took me at least 2 months to complete this painting.

Garfield’s Groovin’ Adventure

This week I submitted two entries to the Helen Woodward Animal Center call for artists for their "Garfield’s Groovin’ Adventure". This is a project similar to "Cows in Europe and Chicago, the Peanuts characters in Saint Paul, the Donkeys and Elephants in Washington D.C. and the Pigs in Seattle" with 5 foot tall Garfield sculptures embelished by atists.

This is a fund raising project for the animal shelter, which I think is all that needs to be said. Here's the designs I submitted:

This 16 x 20 inch painting is one of my newest horse paintings. The shiny metallic shapes at the points of the mane are acid free jewel stickers I found in the scrapbooking section of the arts & crafts supply store. I am experimenting with acrylic mediums and varnish to make sure they don't change the appearance of the sparkley diamonds.

Oddly enough, the link I followed to get to this site says it's called "yourquestion.org"
but when I visit the link it automatically changes to www.droppingknowledge.org. I'm not sure of the signifigance of this, but it bothered me that they promote a link then it changes the url when you get to the site.

I just found this new website. It's called dropping knowledge.org. You can visit this site, ask a question and in 48 hours they say they will have reviewed your question and it will be posted online in 48 hours & will stay there forever (or till something better comes along and the internet becomes obsolete).

I asked 6 questions today and once they are posted to the website registered members can post replies to them. My questions were about art, parenting, health and ageing.

I'll post an update and a review of this site after my questions have posted. It will be interesting to see how many, if any answers I get.

The Butterfly Fairy

Here I am thinking my butterfly paintings are this new developement for me.
Low and behold what do I find? A old collage and a bunch of sketches with
dates in 2001 on them featuring women with butterfly and angel wings.

I was digging thru my flatfiles which are drawers for keeping flat supplies papers and artworks in and found this Fairy that I'd forgotten all about. I mean I so completely forgot about it that it took me about 15 minutes before I was able to remeber making it. Which is shocking, I forgot about a perfectly good artwork. It's even sparkly!

This week I singed up to be part of a "continuous artistic
self-expressive art project community". This site is a
located on a wordpress blog and flickr.com for artists
to join, complete the monthly chanllenge and post their
finished self portraits. The site has links to all
participating artists and makes for some very
interesting blog reading.

They have a button that particiating artists are supposed
to use, but as you can see, the button doesn't work and I
have not firgured out yet who to email to get it fixed.

And getting back to making handbags, here's the finishedphotos of the other bag I made:

I finally forced myself to list this painting on Ebay. I think it's my best horse painting I have right now and was saving it for submitting to shows. But, can't sell it if no one see's it right?

It's really kind of funny that this if my favorite now because after I started this painting I hated it. I was bland, blah, drab and sat in my studio unfinished for many months before I attacked it with black paint and the rest just seemed to fall into place. Now I love it.

This abstract butterfly painting if really fun and flirty, the face is a red heart and it has leaves swirling up around it as it takes flight. This paintings is acrylic paint on unstretched canvas and was completed on 5/20/2006.It is now avalible on ebay with a low starting bid of $20 and no reserve.

My husband traded chores with me, I took his Z28 Camero to the smog shop on Friday so last night he stretched canvas for all 11 sets of stretcher bars that I had sitting in a box in my art supplies. So now I have a plenty of canvas and can go crazy painting! Yippie!

Of course, now his hands are sore because stretching canvas is harder work than it looks. You have to pull it taught with one hand and press hard with the manual stapler with the other at the same time. Poor sweetie. I don't feel sore after smogging his car at all.

Here we have a return to paintings of horses. I have a cool horse in black red & white on my easle now.

Painted in acrylic paint on 16 x 20 inch stretched canvas, the horses have gold paint mixed into the yellow to make their coats shimmer. The horses art outlined and detailed in gold, silver and blue metallic ink.

I have to say, completing a painting a day is harder than I thought it would be. It's not getting the ideas, or even actually making that painting that's hard. Nope, the hard part is...drum roll please...sleeping. Yep, painting a lot keeps me awake at night. Ideas for new paintins swim in my mind preventing me from sleeping.

If I do manage to fall asleep, well, I still have to deal with the dreaded painting dreams. I've found it's just as tiring to dream of painting all night long as it is to actually paint all night long. As far as I can tell the only differance is that if I did paint all night I'd have something to show for it besides dark circles under my eyes and confused demeanor.

Here's a sweet butterfly painting comleted on 5/11. This painting was drawn directly on canvas then painterly brush-strokes were used in the wings and body in shades of pink and orange highlighted with yellow. Finally denim blue background was added with a dark blue outline around the butterfly.

Courtship Painting, commissioned by Sharyn

This stage is the pencil outline on canvas. I call this stage "mapping out" my painting. Once I finished mapping it out I emailed this photo to Sharyn for approval before I began painting.
The first two colors are added.
A deep red undercoat for the background. This it is covered in a pattern of random brushstrokes in three colors of red for texture.

Gold outlines around the horses.

Mica power added to the tan colors as a base for next step. As you can see, this step is a bit messy.

The coat of mica is sealed to allow more vigorous treatment of these areas in the next step. After the sealer is dry I was able to wash off the excess mica power that was smeared onto the red background. Any remaining powerder was painted over in the background colors.

A mixture of tan and metallic gold paint is applied over the mica areas and wiped away so that the tan portions take on a weathered burnished look.

After emailing the photo of the painting to Sharyn at this stage for approval she felt the background was not an earthy enough red. This was a simple fix, I added brush strokes of brick and barn red to give the background more of a earthy red tone.

Detail of writing incorporated into the brushstrokes under the black horses head. This painting has the clients and her husbands names worked into the background. They are not obvious, but layered over eachother throughout the painting.

Detail of tan horse, here you can see where the tan paint applied over the sealed mica power has been wiped off to allow the gold tones to peek out.

Here's is the finished painting as seen in natural light. The dark dot in the image is cause by my camera lens and is not in the actual painting at all.

The paint is flying

I've been in a flower painting frenzy the last few days. Well, except
for yesterday when I didn't paint at all. Today after work I hauled
some paint and canvas and brushes and a jar of flowers outside and
painted fast and furious. The result is kind of like a impressionist
painting with ultra bright colors because I had to dull colors. Maybe
later tonight I'll get a chance to upload them on my PC (I'm using my
son's now since my husband is trying to take a well earned nap in our
room).

In a few minutes I've got to get my son Adrian's best friend David
ready to drop off at his mom's work. He walked over here this
afternoon after having a big fight with his brother and his brothers
girlfriend. But it's getting a bit late and it is a school night and
Randy's school is having the SAT 9 tests (or whatever) this week.

Yesterday after I woke up from my nap after work I caught my husband filling one of my paint brush water jars up and putting roses from our yard in it. He tried to sneak past me on his way to put them on my work desk (I work from home) to surprize me. The look on his face was so cute. They are arrainged so pretty and smell so freash here on my desk. I think that's what I'll paint after work today.

A painting frenzy

Yesterday I devoted most of the morning to starting a lion painting, working on a yellow horse painting and finishing up two other horse paintings. It was so invigorating to get so much done. I'll post some photos later today after I've gotten a chance to photograph them.

Shedding paint brushes.

I have a concern, a complaint, a pet peeve! I hate shedding paint brushes. And I have a suspicious looking specimen sitting right in front of me. It looks fine, it feels fine and when I tug on the bristles none fall out. But I've had an encounter with it's kind before and the results are not pretty.

What bothers me the most is that this is a name brand paint brush. One that claims it has high quality but sells really cheap. Which brings me to the self blame department, what did I think I was going to get out of the cheapest paintbrush I could buy? Apparently I thought I'd get a brush that didn't leave it's fake nylon hairs embedded in my paintings!
